What can we expect out of Dante Exum in the coming season? What is he best at? What might he improve? In transition Exum proved to be one of the stronger players for the Jazz. His speed and length gives him a big advantage in the open court, and he’s got a knack for finding the open man as he’s always got his head up on the run.
The majority of Dante’s off ball looks came from his positioning. In transition, he spreads the floor and looks for the ball. And in the half court, he is typically waiting for a crosscourt pass to the corner three, or he’s on one of the wings looking for an open shot. Utah’s offense doesn’t involve much PG off ball movement, however, Dante usually shook his man when he’d cut off ball, and get an open look. More of this in summer league.
Off ball, Dante was allowed to cheat a bit, since he has the insurance of Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors behind him, and with his quickness, if he’s beat, he can usually catch up. Just look at this. This causes tons of problems for the opposing team’s passing lanes, since it practically takes out an entire off ball option of their offense. You can see him cheating to help Favors with Cousins here, but a poorly passed ball ends in an easy transition bucket and foul.
Exum is just turning 21, and has already shown tons of signs offensively, and is already one of our best perimeter defenders. His length and speed help him in so many ways, and improving his pull up jump shot can make him a much stronger offensive player. Adding him back to our 2016-17 roster will make a huge difference defensively, and will bring back the Exum/Gobert pick and roll. Adding Exum in transition compared to our other PG’s should do wonders as well.
